Without Drew Brees, the Chargers will be a mediocre 8-8 or 9-7 team. I dont think Philip Rivers will be able to carry that team even with Tomlinson and Gates.

I think they will have a rough start, I'd say probably 5 or 6 wins, with the majority coming in the middle of the season. Even though he has been a charger for 2 yrs now and was a good QB in college, the nfl is a different league and what defense has he had to practice against. Don't get me wrong, I'm a charger fan, but the charger secondary is pathetic. Overall, he will need a season or two to reach his potential, and he does have the arm strength to get the ball down the field, but what good is that with no deep field threat at the wr position.

Without Brees, I would say that if Rivers doesn't deliver, the Chargers will have to hope that Charlie Whitehurst can come up and save them (2006 3rd RD Draft Pick) or salvage the season and revamp the offense ...

Chargers go 8-8; miss the wild card spot in the AFC West

Bad move, letting Brees blow away. That division is so tough right now, and the talent on the Chargers around Rivers is smokin'. I say the Chiefs take their place as the second best and SD maybe goes 8-8. Probably more like 6-10.

Phillip Rivers started for 4 years at NC State, he was a very good college quarterback in the same way Ty Detmer was. I don't think he has the arm strength to become a big-time pro QB. I've been wrong before, but not this time. LT is worth 5 or 6 wins a year, so 8 wins is the absolute max until they make a change at QB.

I will venture to say that they Chargers will go 10 & 6 this year with Phillip Rivers leading the offense. His teammates have spoken highly of him during the off-season voluntary workouts and he has a strong offensive line to help him out.

It is not as if he is starting for the Houston Texans where the QB is a deer caught in the headlights. Phillip Rivers had a strong college career and he seems to be on his way to a good football career, too.

AFC West is probably the most competitive division in football. Drew Brees is one of the most underrated QBs in the league, but they still have LT. Tomlinson is the best all around player in the league. Any team with him on it has at least wild card potential.

6-10

Philip Rivers has sat and done nothing for what 2 years now? It'll take him a few games to kick it back into gear. The Broncos and the Chiefs are loaded and the Chargers are gonna have a hard time keeping up now.

I'm not sure with this being Phillip Rivers first season as a starter, but if he catches on quick the Chargers could do pretty good maybe 9-7.
