I think it's because she has become a spinster (or the polite equivalent) and has spent her time indoors reading a lot and thus she may now need glasses.
When she met George, she was more out and about, enjoying and reveling in life with her new boyfriend/husband and thus she wasn't spending her days indoors with little light.
Just a guess.
Hope that this helps.

Instead of spending her days in activities which would maintain eye health by challenging her to use both near and far vision (like raising children and keeping up a home), she had resorted to life as a librarian, mostly reading books in poor late-40s light, which would have had a profound negative effect on her eye sight.
Thus, the bookish librarian Mary had glasses, while the outgoing mother and wife Mary had better eye sight.

My guess: It shows that rather than having a great life with George, she remained single and spent a lot of time in the library. The common wisdom of the day was that lots of reading made your eyesight worse.

She'd be a spinster, work at the library and everyone knows librarians wear glasses. Back then they thought that spending too much time reading books would make you nearsighted.

Without the love of her life, she 'experimented'. She got burned and burned again. Many may see her as a spinster, but she used to be quite the "Party girl" before the evil of her ways caught up to.
Thank Goodness she stopped before going blind, or the film would have missed a good chunk.

Hi,I love this movie, however the glasses thing, not sure of,lol!!I think the whole reason Clarence showed him his life,if he wasnt in it, was what would have happened to the people in his life,if he wasnt there. It showed him the impact that he had on people and how important he really was to them all!

They only did this to make her look more spinsterish, since she never married she had to look like an old maid.
