As recently as 1984, there still existed mutual respect and civility between Republicans and Democrats. Why the radical change? Why are we all so divided and combative? Was it always there but the internet and in your face media allowed the radicals of both parties to dictate party policy? I would prefer peaceful dialogue for the good of the whole country. Do you prefer the constant cat fight that politics as become?

I think we need more moderates, and less Neocons (I just learned that word) and Ultra-Liberals (I have heard that one too much)

The cause of the catfight is people clinging to the party line, because they are in the party, and not thinking for themselves.

I believe that the media has a lot to blame for this. It is a fact that most of those in journalism are liberal (this isn't an attack it's a fact). Too many use that power to further their own agendas (i.e. Dan Rather). When people are constantly bombarded with negative stereotypes or downright lies about one political party they start to believe it themselves. Feeling enlightened and on the "right" side they feel empowered to "attack" the other side. This is no different than how smokers are treated in this society.

In the 1980s there was still some semblance of non-biased journalism. That quickly came to an end in the 1990s and that is when a lot of these problems came about.

dude even people with the same political party have this issue. take the california governor race for example. steve westly and phil angelides fought agaisnt each other to get the democratic spot to run against the governator. those 2 fought sooo bad and used negative ads on each other. its just really stupid bcuz they are both democrats! they should have one common goal! i think that the division between republicans and democrats is because we have bigger issues now then we did years ago.

Are you kidding? Ever read about the political fights in the late 1800's? Disrespect between the parties is nothing new.

time for a new party!

JEFFBEV, what about the PTL and 700 club of the 80s? Now has it's own show on Foxnews. Don't blame it all on the media, unless you want to blame ALL media.

No. Actually, I'm neither a democrat or republican, but neither side wants to LISTEN to each other. They just want to insult each other because that would be easier.
