the printer is on and hooked to the computer, I can't figure out what's going on with it

Many possible reasons. Try the following in the given order -
1. Check the cable. Try by using another cable.
2. Completely remove the driver and re-install with all features.
3. Look for any error messages - windows too may have some problem.
4. Which port are you using? Try by using another port (if you have option. If your printer is added with both USB and Parallel port)
5. Connect the printer to another computer. If the result is same the printer port is defective.
6. Connect another printer to the same port of your computer.

That happens with my printer whenever there is a paper jam or other printing problem. Just uncheck the "use printer offline" option and go on from there.

Un-plug the printer>Un-installation all drivers and software> potential down and re-boot. (a million) Load the software and drivers in FIRST (2) Now plug the printer in and All will be properly. do not try it any incorrect way round because the software has to bypass on to the device first previously the printer is correct.
