DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Some internet sitres actually have clauses in their member's agreements that gives them total rights to your works. What I did was attend live poetry readings with real people, and asked them this same question. I'm keeping it simple for now, publishing my works in a local paper. A publishing house will look at subject matter differently if the writer has been getting some small levels of exposure.

alk to other poets, and be careful with online sites like Poetry.com and such. I lost rights to two poems that way!
Good luck.

i also write and love poetry...unfortunately the audience for it has diminished quite a bit no one really cares about it like that anymore but, i've had several of my pieces published through a site called poetry.com they publish a collection every so often...you don't get paid for it but you do get your name out there and a discount on the book...i'm published in three of them they are very nice hard back books that look great on a coffee table especially opened up to your page for people to see when they come over! if this is not what you want to do then you can get all your pieces together and send them off to various publishing companies...i did this also but there's not really any companies that want to publish a book of poetry that might not sell...your best bet might be just to pay for the book to be published yourself and you could order however many copies you want and sell them yourself or give them away as christmas presents...it's pretty tough and expensive though. i hope i helped...good luck!!!!

I won a $1,000 prize plus a trophey from the following website. It is a great place to start, also, if you join the international society of poets you can get discounts on publishing cost of the poetry. you may also just submit your poem and get a chance to have it published with many others. I am published in the book titled "twilight musings" I am the first poet in the book.

There are several really great directories to look for specific journals and magazines that publish different types of poetry. These two are the best I've found. Both are directories that let you search on various criteria:

www.litline.org
www.writersmarket.com

Also, Poets & Writers magazine is a great resource for contests if you're looking to go that route. Good luck!

Whatever you do, DON'T do it on sites like poetry.com. Yes, they will get your poem published (for a high price) along with others who registered... all in the same book. This is regardless of whether or not your poem was good. And nobody's going to read it--just the other suckers who fell for it too.

I love to write poetry too. I never really tried to get it published... but anyhow, i think you should try selling it for the paper. Then maybe, just MAYBE you'll get someone that'll help you publish a poetry book. Try that. Goodluck!!!

Never post at poetry.com. All you will get is your poem online and a book that costs over 50 bucks.
You can start a blog and have your poem online. Or you can submit to poetry journals.

try online poetry journals like poeticdiversity.org, and others. Check out poetry.com for lists of poetry journals currently seeking submissions, invest in a poet's market yearly book (about 40 dollars).

Go to the library and pick up the latest copy of the magazine called "Poets & Writers" which lists dozens of small press magazines currently looking for poems. This is the best place!

Just realize that you need to get some rejections before your get some acceptances. Don't give up and keep writing.
