They're not doing it intentionally. They always buzz, you just don't hear it until they're really close to your ear.

they buzz everywhere, but you only know they are there cause you hear them ... once 6 inches from your ear, you assume there is nothing there (unless you see it)

I think it is warmer there, because heat escapes most from the top of our heads. The warmer ambience attracts them, I think.
