The white paint on the bottom of the tree is an insectacide. It keeps ants and other destructive bugs from burroughing into the bark and causing damage to the tree.

I've heard to keep insects from killing the trees. Where I live I see lots of trees painted white @ the base and where limbs have been trimmed.

I landed in Karachi in 1984 on a back packer, and all of the palm tree bases were painted white !
This mystified me also !
I soon discovered it was to avert disaster as most of the truck drivers were smashed on opium !
UK roads have White lines, Pakistan roads have white trees !
Is this the same where you are ?

it told the the slave masters of both the north and south when a slave was trying to escape,and it told them if at night people were out and about in their yards.(that's one tale I have heard for years),what I know for a fact is here in the southern states it was,and still is done with a lime based paint that is good for the tree,and is a insect repellent-the insect harmful to the tree.

The earliest i understand of have been whitewashed -- After vehicles have been ample the wood have been painted interior the front backyard or the turn of the driveway to remind drivers the wood have been there. keep in mind the preliminary headlights have been carbide lanterns-- very dim. extra beneficial than you ever needed-- huh!

It is so the tree isnt attacked by crawling insects it blinds them and makes the surface too slippery for climbing up
