is it ethical for a solicitor, who is supposed to be on the side of the accused, to be married to a policeman, isn't this conflict of interest?

It is not a conflict of interest unless the policeman is involved in your particular case. In that case the lawyer should refer you to another, impartial lawyer.

Why would it be a conflict of interests?

If he/she was married to the officer who arrested the accused then he/she would have to declare a 'conflict of interests'.

Simply being 'accused' doesn't mean the person is guilty and the judiciary allows for that.

Many solicitors work 'for' individuals who they might feel or even know are guilty but do not add their own moral bias to the situation. Why would that professionalism change because they are married to a police person?

Bias would come into it from any morally guided individual what ever their employment. If I was married to a solicitor would that mean as a teacher my solicitor wife would have a conflict of interest if she was acting for a father accused to hitting his child or a hit and run driver who knocked over a mum & daughter on their way to school?

Yes of course. Bec, being a solicitor or policemen its just there professional life. So it has no effect on there private life, but obviously this is applied only for person who dont mix there professional life with their private life. In the view of law, i think yes. Sure it is ethical. You, on the other hand, have been warned to do a thorough search of your solicitors background to be sure they are qualified and comptent for your trial. It is not up to the lawyer to prove they are qualified and ethical.
