it was originally "in the garden of eden", but the iron butterfly lead singer was so stoned that he slurred the words, saying "inna godda da vida." the guitarist thought it sounded cool, so they kept it.

"In the garden of Eden", related trivia, in the Simpsons, Bart "changed" the words and title to "In a godda da vida" to "In the garden of Eden" and slipped in all the hymnals. The simpsons writers claim to not have know that was the original song when they came up with the gag.

"In A Gadda Da Vida" was originally supposed to be titled "In The Garden of Eden". But the lead singer was drunk while recording the song.
