a previous writer was right - cheap and in expensive are oxymoron's- you need to add more info- where will you be working? will you be driving < using public transportation ?will you need to get to a mosque, synagogue, or a church on regular basis ? things to consider.
Brooklyn like all New York boroughs is a collection of small-for new york-ethnic towns with all the positives and negatives that brings. Me I' d live in Bay Ridge

Dream on a two bedroom in a reasonably safe neighborhood is going to run you $1600 to start as the entire borough gentrifies rents are just going to keep going up. Try to find something in Bay Ridge, good luck.

check on craigslist for apartments - but is going to be a neighborhood that is "up and coming" like sunset park.
your best bet is to go check out listings, walk around a bit and see how you feel about the area.

nice areas: Marine Park, Midwood, Bay Ridge
Try NJ, it's much cheaper and close to manhattan
