yes, I think that in order to come to America you should already know or learn enlgish immediently. I hate it when I go somewhere and see a bunch of people speaking spanish IN AMERICA.. My first language was spanish, but I learned enlgish before I moved here. also, I hate seeing immigrants talking bad about the U.S when they moved here... it's like why did you come here if you hate bush and our society so much?

well, YES!! If you move to Germany, you need to speak German. If you move to Italy, Italian. If you were to immigrate to Mexico, it is their LAW you have to speak Mexican/Spanish. In other countries, you don't get interpreters when you go to the hospital or court, you HAVE to SPEAK the LANGUAGE!! The OFFICIAL Language of the U.S.A. is English. If you move here to make a better life, then you should be EMBRACING the laws and conform to living here by speaking the language.
The exceptions are countries the have more than one official language like Canada (English AND French) or Switzerland, they have English, French German and Italian. It's fun to read product labels in Switzerland!

Hi! I'm actually bi-lingual. English is my second language. I have BA in ESL. And it's easy for me to live in US. But all my friends immigrants, who had to come here when they were in their late 30s or 40s can't speak as I do. They call me all the time asking to translate spam-letters, bills, etc. I understand that it's hard for them...but honestly I understand it is hard to study another language when you are over 35. As a linguist I can say not every person can do that.
The US is the country of immigrants, it's started like that and it's always will be like that.
The country should have one official language.
Be patient to immigrants, they do their best trying to express themselves.

I personally think that we can speak our own language anywhere no matter where if it is in the US or any country.
This is a free country and we can speak the language we want too and of course the language we know.

Yes, having an official language that the majority of LEGAL residences speak would facilitate communication and commerce.
