1) Taxes! See the bill and you will see all the nifty 'extra taxes, 911, number portability' etc.

2)Also, do you have your interent and phone and long distance together?

3)if you don't pay 'extra' to your phone company to get a good per minute rate for long distance, you are paying a lot per minute to call long distance

4) do you make lots of toll calls? (i.e. same area code but outside your immediate area)

5) do you have lots of extras (i.e. caller id, voice mail, three way calling, etc) that you don't know about?

My suggestion (and that goes for everybody) is that every 6 months or less, call the phone company and have a service person go over your bill and tell you WHY the bill is so high and what better plan they can offer. Ask them to review your bill for last 6 months and they can tell you if you have been making lots of long distance to a certain place what they have to offer. Also, all the extras on your phone....if you remove, will it save you money? It has to be a question, because some 'deals' are a package - remove a part of the package and you are at square 1 and paying more

ALSO, if you can get another provider (competitor) for the service, compare them and see who has the best deal for you.

You might find that removing long distance and replacing with a pre-paid phone card for those is better?

Cellphone: are you using it in conjunction with your land line? Which has a better deal.

Bottomline: CALL Customer Service at your phone company and ask them to go over your bill and try to come up with a better deal for you.

And ADD Up all the taxes/fees and see what part of that is in your bill

Check out what you use your phone for - are you on the right package? call your phone provider and ask them what they can do for you - ask if there are any special deals available, check what new offers they have - have you taken advantage of ALL of the value add services that your provider offers eg, friends and family on BT - If you dont ask, you dont get - but make sure you've got some idea of the type of calls you make - a good telephone provider will always ask lots of questions about what you want from company before they make any suggestions or put you onto any tariff

Your phone bill depends on the volume of calls you make daily but this may not be the answer to your question!
Did you know that many phone companies charge service charge and line rental charge? Trust me, check on your bill! You will be billed for:
a) The cost of calls
b) Your line rental (which is monthly)
c) Added charge for service charges
d) Line rental connection charges that accumulate on a monthly variance.

That is why it is important to choose a service provider who does not add service charges.

Obviously you use it too much, ask the phone co. to arrange a package so you pay less after 6pm or some other offer. In the U.K. there are different options as with mobiles. Send e-mails much cheaper !

Maybe because you have sent a lot of text messages or subscribed to a premium rate phone service to receive texts? Also check if anyone else using your phone without your knowledge?

Why don't you actually take a look at your phone bill? It should be pretty easy to see why you're getting billed so steeply.
