The answer is not clear cut as there are many theories being bandied about on who is responsible for the attacks on the 11th of september 2001.
The clear answer is that The USA invaded Afghanistan because they believed the culprit for the attacks on Sptember 11th 2001, on the United Sates of America, to be the Taliban. As we now know, the Taliban denied the attacks and the origin of the film showed by 'Fox' news purporting to be Bin Laden, the leader of the Taliban, claiming responsibility for the attacks is unknown.
'Conspiracy theory' suggests that the long answer is that the invsion was a calculated step to bring the USA closer to controlling the countries known to own major oil reserves. The USA governmnet held the Taliban responsible for the attacks in the USA on the 11th of Spetember. It was then purported that the Taliban (read up about the origins and history to the current time of the Taliban) had links to the Iraqi government, S Hussein, and that the Iraqi government had access to Nuclear weapons/ Weapons of Mass Destruction. It was based on this 'intelligence' that the USA invaded Iraq. This 'intelligence' has been found to be misinformation by both the USA and UK governments. Saddam Hussein is being charged for 140 murders of Curds. These men were found guilty of crimes against the state by the sovreign Iraqi courts and were sentenced to the maximun penalty of death. In Iraq, you can be sentenced out of your presence.
The USA invaded Afghanistan because they needed a route to Iraq. Controlling Iraq means that the USA is able to add momentum to it's economy by using it's two main money makers, the military and energy.
Yes, there is oil in Iraq.

The U.S. was trying to show its muscle, score a victory and scare everyone in the world. They don’t care about the suffering of the Afghans or how many people we will lose. Afghans are now being made to suffer for these Arab fanatics, but we all know who brought these Arabs to Afghanistan in the 1980s, armed them and gave them a base. It was the Americans and the CIA. And the Americans who did this all got medals and good careers, while all these years Afghans suffered from these Arabs and their allies. When America was attacked on 9-11, instead of punishing the Americans who did set up the foundations for the Taliban, it punishes the Afghans who resisted the Taliban (and lost due to US support of the Taliban) and continue to do so every day.
The overthrow of the Taliban regime was not a war aim. The war aim announced on October 12, five days after the bombing began, was that the Taliban leadership should hand over to the United States people who the U.S. suspected of participating in terrorist actions–the U.S. refused to provide evidence–and warned the Afghan people that unless this was done, they would be bombed. Over two weeks later, when the war was pretty much coming to an end, the war aim of overthrowing the Taliban regime was added.
Afghanistan has been returned back where it was, run by warlords and gangsters.
Afghanistan's significance to the balance of energy and power in Central Asia stems from its geographical position as a potential transit route for oil and natural gas exports from Central Asia to the Arabian Sea.

Oh please will people who dont have a clue what they are talking about stop mentioning oil.
The invasion of Afghanistan was to shut down the Taliban regime which was harbouring Bin Laden and his massive terrorist training camps which had produced the 9/11 hijackers (you do remember 9/11 don't you?).
Those same training camps produced the 7/7 bombers and the Madrid bombers.
President Clinton had actually launched cruise missile attacks to try and get Bin Laden there after the african embassy bombings in 1998, so it wasnt the first time.
And actually Afghanistan does have oil reserves, which Russia is currently looking to extract for their domestic consumption and to support the Afghan economy. The U.S does not need or want any oil from either there or anywhere else in the middle east.

The invasion into Afghanistan was in direct correlation to the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center--responsibility for that operation was admitted by Osma Bin Laden who at the time was being hosted in that country by the ruling faction--the Taliban---who almost assuredly played a key hand in facilitating the attack...The US government gave the Taliban several oportunities to turn over Bin Laden and were warned that eminent attack was in the offing--they defiantly refused and the war began----there is very little to no oil in Afghanistan

We went there to find Bin Laden. Then George thought God told him to be the policeman of the world and go look for Hussein instead and see if he really had WMD or if it was only a dream. Then while he was there, he thought he could change thousands of years of arguing between the different groups in Iraq and God told him: "let there be democracy in the middle east even if you have to lie about WMD to get there". And he did lie. But God said that was okay "just this one time". The End

To stop the extremist Muslim group called the Taliban from taking over the country, who were executing their people in the soccer arena, including any woman who dare show her ANKLE around another man.
It's also important we have allies in the region. We have to stop them before they get close to OUR shores.
No oil as far as I know.
