It covers a lot of things for your vacation. If you need to cancel because of sickness, or any other reason covered, they will pay your cancellation fees or anything like that.

If you get sick while on vacation, it will cover your medical costs. If you need to see a doctor, stay in the hospital, have surgery, if you need transportation, etc. It will all be covered.

If your flight is cancelled or delayed and you have to stay an extra night, it will cover you. The company I use will actually book me the next available flight. They pay for the hotel stay and any additonal costs in the air, as well as food.

If you have a delayed fligth coming or going, they will give you a certain amount of money if you are delayed for a certain amount of time. If you baggage is lost or damaged they will also reimburse you for that.

If you have a rental car, it will cover an accidents you may have. While your insurance for your car may cover you, if you were in an accident your insurance would go up in cost. If you have travel protection, it won't.

These are just a few things. I never travel any more without travel protection. It makes you feel a lot better. It covers a lot and is well worth it if you consider what it could cover. Most thing you may not even think about until after it happens.

To cover things such as medical costs in a foreign country when you don't expect one (i.e. accident).

I had a skiing accident in Korea. Fortunately I bought a travel insurance which covered all my medical costs and the visits when I go back home. If not, I would have to pay US 1,500 out of my own packet!

So make sure you get one when you travel!

If you buy it and nothing goes wrong, then you think "What a waste of money!"

Then comes the one time, your bags are lost, you feel sick and need a doctor, your flight is delayed and you've missed all the connections, THEN - Insurance pays for itself.

I never travel with out it.

For short, domestic trips not usually worth it. For long, international trips, definitely buy it for medical coverage, emergency health travel, in case you have to cancel the trip. If you are in China and have to return (emergency surgery, for example), it could cost you hundreds of thousands & they won't take care of you w/o insurance.
