Thanks for taking the time to read this. My passport has been taken by my landlord because I am currently arrears with my rent. Does anyone know if there are a law against it? I had no choice and had to give it to him, or he would have me move out. I was injured (broken hand) and couldn't afford my rent, now I am well again but cant find work without a passport. If you have any advice I will appreciate it!!!!!!!

This is illegal. Find a lawyer in your area today. And, while you're at it, go to the local police in person and beg for help. Do it today.

The passport is Government property. He has taken collateral.Explain to him that you cannot work without it and that he can take something else instead. He is obviously scared that you are going to run off without paying up your debts. If you give him something of value.....a gold ring or something like that and ask him for the passport back he will probably do so. You should give him something to the value of what rent you owe him and the matter should be solved amicably. If you were in arrears with your rent and had no work you could get benefits to tide you over....Go to citizens Advice Bureau and find out how to get your benefits so you are not in a mess.

If you gave him you passport voluntarily to keep him from booting you out, you have no legal recourse. He has a perfect right to hold on to it until you pay what you owe. If on the other hand , if he took it out of your apartment without consent, then you have legal redress. The only advice I can give you if you need the passport right away is to pay your landlord in FULL to settle your debt.

Are you in the US? Renters and landlords have specific legal rights, depending on where you are. It sounds as though you voluntarily surrendered your passport to your landlord, and he will no doubt say you asked him to keep it safe for you, but for future reference, he has no right to demand it from you. By the way, why do you need a passport in order to work?

nobody has the right to take your passport and you don't need your passport to take a job. call the police to have your passport returned and the citizens advice bureau about your landlord/rent problem.

I would say its out of order for someone else to have your passport, and this may be illegal.
Would the DHSS not help you with any allowances or your rent.
I would contact the Citizens Advice Bureau.

That is definately illegal. Contact the police or your lawyer if you have one. They will make him give it back to you. Just because you owe rent doesn't mean he has the right to take that.

Your passport dosen't belong to you, it belongs to the government. If he wont give it back, get the police involved.
