I got my tongue pierced not to long ago, but whenever i go looking for rings, they have lengths on them. such as (5/8, 11/16, 3/4, 13/16, 7/8, 15/16, 1). my question is, does it matter what length the ring is that i wear?

it does matter what the length of the barbell is. generally when a tongue piercing is fully healed it's a 5/8. that's the standard length. oftentimes the longer lengths are for new piercings to allow for swelling. or people with larger tongues, etc. a longer barbell could make talking difficult for you, or you will end up biting the jewelry. it depends on how recently your tongue was done. if it's been done in the past month or so i would say get an 11/16 to 3/4 depending on the thickness of your tongue. if it's been several months, the 5/8 should be fine.

ps-it's the length of the actual bar and doesn't include the balls in the measurement. you will most likely want a 14g as well since that's the standard gauge. i would definitely talk to your piercer ot see what they can recommend. when in doubt ask them. please don't listen to the people saying it's gauges. those are lengths. gauges run in numbers like 10g, 12g, 14g, 16g. etc.

There should be a gage, which is the thickness of the metal going through your tongue, and then the length from ball to ball.

its of and inch. 5/8 of an inch on so on. If its too short it will dig into your tongue and not leave the muscle room to bulge and flex. Eventually the irritation could cause infection. But you also dont want the ring so long that it is in the way of things. It has to be jusssst right.

Get something from a good dealer, and ask them to help you.

The gage is the diameter of the bar (the size of the hole in your tongue) - usually ranging from an 8 gage (thick) to a 14 gage (much thinner). The length of the bar is dependant on the thickness of your tongue. Don't get something too long, otherwise you'll keep hitting the ball with your teeth (ouch). When in doubt, ask the person behind the counter selling the bars...

What matters is that when you put it in is it comfortable, everyones tongue is a different thickness therefor they make the barbells in different lengths for different people. If you want a recomendation go back to your piercer or another one local to you and ask them to measure the thickness of your tongue with calipers, this will give you a better idea of what will fit you best. The gauge is the thickness of the stem which is standardly a 14, sometimes a 12 (if your not sure go with 14 it's thinner and will fit either way).

I've had my tongue ring for over a year. The guy used a long bar to peirce it as you probably already know because of swelling. When the swelling went down it drove me crazy. I changed it to a shorter bar and I forget its even there sometimes. It doesn't matter what length you wear its more of a preference. My daughter likes the long bar better. She said its easier to clean without taking it out. Hope this helps.

I guess if you have a rally thick tongue, you need a 7/8 (probably 7/8 of an inch). A thin tongue would take a 5/8".

Boy, I bet that hurts.

those aren't the lengths, but the gages. If you are unsure of what size gage your piercing has, ask the person selling it to you to have a look at yours. It should be in your mouth so that shouldn't be a problem. If they cant tell, RUN, you shouldn't be buying jewlery for a piercing if the person selling it to you doesn't know anything as basic as gages. You should buy your initial change out jewlery from a piercing shop. Make sure that you write down the gage after they tell you.

Just find one that is long enough for your tongue. I had to get mine pierced with a longer one b/c my tongue is thick, but now I can buy the regular sized ones with a 12 or 14 gauge.

I used to have my tongue pierced and liked the shorter rings. The shorter they are, the less likely it is to accidentally bite it or damage your teeth. Also it's easier to talk with a shorter ring and hide it if you don't want an employer/family member/etc. to see it. As far as reasons for having a longer one? I couldn't find any good ones...really didn't make a difference for any uses.

Thats the gauge or thickness of the post. You will want to change the length(if you still have the long one you got at the shop)to a shorter one or you may chip your teeth.
