When you have two teams on the same court, both sides need to be able to distinguish at a glance who they're passing to so that's the reason for the different colors between teams.
To help limit confusion, a rule has been established that when you are playing on your home court you will wear white and when you play away from home you wear the dark colors.
The different colors between teams such as red, black, orange, etc. are determined by the teams and usually have something to do with their home towns colors, but not always.

Generally for all sports the home team is in white.
Recently marketing has produced additional versions of uniforms so sucker fans would buy them, but still a team has a home and an away uniform

When they play home games, they wear their "home uniforms" and when they play a game on the road, they wear their "away uniforms". This is why they have different colors.

Usually teams have "whites" and "colors".
Usually the "home" team gets to decide which they wear, and the other team has to adjust.
Since there are so many teams, there are going to be several "blue" teams whose colors are not different enough for easy court identification. In that case, the home team might choose to wear their "colors" which would be mostly blue, and the visiting team would have to wear their "whites" which would be white with blue trim.

For home games, they wear the light jersey and for away they wear the colored. They started this when they had black and white tvs so you could tell them apart.

I think it depends on whether it is a home game or not. Not sure if it is light or dark for home or away games but that is how it is decided

I not 100% sure. I think it's like baseball. They have a "home" court jersey and an "away" court jersey.
