ya i think there is a lot of difference between the two terms.feeling sorry shall express your affectionate behaviour towards the person whereas pity shows that you dont like the person but due to some reason feeling bad for him.pity dosent come out of love but humanity

Frm my point of view, you say or feel sorry for someone's when a mishap done to the person was brought about due to something you did or failed to do. Bt pity is felt when the said mishap done was in no way due to your doing or negligence.
Example...
You mistakenly trip someone(u say or feel sorry)
Some trips over a stone and falls( you say 'what a pity'. Thus u feel pity)...
Oops! That came out quite long

Feeling Sorry For Someone

You may be thinking of a difference between "pity" and "sympathy." We can all identify with another's sadness, but it is something of an equal relationship, with appropriate respect. That is sympathy. To me, pity or feeling sorry for another is somewhat condescending: you can't do it for yourself, so I have to help you. In current parlance, "It must suck to be you!."

being "sorry" is more along the lines of "wow" you must really feel terrible or "i feel awful that happened. "pity" is an emotion usually resulting from an encounter with an unfortunate, injured, or pathetic person or creature. pity will often take mercy on the person.

i think feeling sorry for someone implies there is empathy. one can relate or understand and care. pity, i think, may imply that there is an underlying implication of someone knew what they were getting into... kind of a reach isn't it?
