Seeing alot of these assinine answers is really irking me.
First Cornsnakes need to be fed an appropriatly sized rodent once a week. Not once a month.
Second, do not get an iguana, they are so much work and can become very dangerous, read the links i provided.
Third, good first time lizards are leopard geckos, african fat tail geckos, crested geckos, banded geckos, bearded dragons.
Some easy amphibianas are american toads, whites tree frogs, green tree frogs, barking tree frogs, firebelly toads, firebelly newts.
ALWAYS research an animal thoroughly before buying and make sure you can provide it with the exact care and attention it needs.

I agree with lady, on everything. Iguanas should be kept with more experienced hobbiest, not new comers.
If you want something you can handle, stay away from amphibians and anything that can climb a wall...they will escape. Amphibians are not meant to handle anyways...
Good reps would be the geckos previously listed. I like the bearded dragons more, because they have a wider range of diet, so you don't have to constantly supply them with insects. No matter which way you go, there is also no "cheap" pet...keep that in mind. Proper set ups for any of these animals will be well over $150...and mainanence is not too too bad, depending more so on which you go with.
Snakes are great pets though...habitats are easy to set up, and the once a week feeding is nice. Now, if you're like me...and you fall in love with snakes easily, you have to keep in mind, you have to pay for all the food each week for em...so in my case, that's 6 adult mice, a fuzzy and a pinky. ^__^
Good luck..do your research for sure. Understand and KNOW what you're getting into before you purchase your new friend.
V link for info on beardies ^__^

hats off to Lady Crotalus's answer :). I myself see the leopard gecko and the African fat tail as the 1# geckos. Crested geckos are very neat and come in 2# only because they need a little more work and need more care. Stay away from Iguanas they are the worst first pet for anyone. So many are abused and poorly taken care of it is sad. Look at all the iguana rescue sites. www.kingsnake.com is another great site for all info on herps.

A Bearded Dragon is a good pet. It's easy to take care of and doesn't cause trouble, unless you give it the run of the house! Our Bearded Dragon has lived in a large fish tank for almost eight years.
