Stay away from depo!! IT nearly killed me. I was on the shot for about a week before I started to bleed..they told me it was normal. 3months of continual bleeding later, I was diagnosed as severely anemic...so anemic that it took almost 3 months of iron injections and pills to get my blood count back to normal. It caused my hair to fall out, I was a total ***** to everyone around me..and I gained weight while on it...I was unloading trucks for a living and still couldnt lose it!
I would talk to the dr to see if there is any other form of B/C you can use.

I'm 24 years old. I first got on the shot when I was 14 (just to be safe). I was on it until I was 21. I never had a problem. I had no weight gains, I had no hair loss, or loss of sexual desire. I stopped when I was 21 in order to have a baby with my husband. It only took 3 months to conceive. After the baby was born I went back on until we were ready again. I still had a period, although it was much shorter. 3 days vs. 5 days and it was very light.

Really all you can do is read the pros and cons and see if its something you're willing to do. I am pregnant right now (by choice) and am considering a change after I have the baby. I was discussing the new IUC with my doctor. Its a much safer version of the IUD. It can be expensive and SOME insurance companies won't cover it, but you won't have to worry about any major changes or anything for 5 years.

But my suggestion is to read all the pros and cons and discuss any questions with your doctor, that's what he's there for, he won't steer you in the wrong way. Good luck and I hope all goes well.

I want to add that every birth control has different effects to everyone. As you see some people have had terrible effects as others have had none at all. Everyone's hormones are different, and cause different reactions for everyone. Anyone telling to just not do it... well don't listen to them, make your own decision based on the facts and a conversation with your physician.

I was on the depo shot for three years. I liked it. I didn't have a period for that time either. Now while on it i did put some pounds on but was able to maintain a regular weight, i didn't fluctueate. Once i was off of the depo shot, i started having a regular cycle again but it was two years before i got preg again.

I liked for me however, the weight gain is why i'm not taking it now. Hope that helps.

Oh, and once on it that first month make sure you use protection not just for disease control but for birthcontrol, it takes a month or so for it to really become effective, and anitbiotics have the same effect on it just like if you were taking the pill. So be smart and think.

I loved the Depo, I was on it for a year, then the weight gain started. I didn't have a period, which was nice, just some spotting about the time I would need an injection. At first I slowly gained weight and went off it, had a baby, got back on after my son was born and gained at least 30 pounds in a month. But I just heard recently that they now limit the amount of time you can be on it, so maybe that helps. I LOVED it until the weight gain. My friend lost some hair, but I didn't.

I started on the Depo shot about 2 years ago and it was absolutely horrible!! At first I had no Periods for the first 3 months and then the next 6 months I continuously had my period non stop i was misserable. Also unlike any other birth control if you quit and try to have children it can take up to a year and a half to have kids or even be able to have kids.

I had it, and was just as psycho on it as I was through 2 pregnancies. And that craziness lasted for about a year after I was supposed to have a renewal shot. NO, THANK YOU!
When I say psycho, I don't mean it to be funny. I mean... I once equated my mentality to that of someone on drugs. Of course it was a couple years later, after I had become a drug addict and began "recovering," that my hormones DID make me crazy....like someone on drugs.
I started losing my hair when I was pregnant the first time, and it stayed thin until all that depo crap was over. I also never dropped below 200 pounds despite working out for 2-6 hours every day (I had a VERY physical job).
That's just my story. Everybody's different, and you could very well be fine with it. I, on the other hand, will NEVER AGAIN use depo as a method of birth control.

Well, Depo is a good pregnancy prevention, but it has many side effects. Weight gain, mood swings, can cause or make migraines worse. Also a friend of mine who is studying to be a doctor recently found out that many women are being taken off of Depo because it has cause loss in bone mass density. I was just on Depo, and have decided to not get any more shots because I don't need anymore medical problems, and my migraines have steadily been getting worse.

Well, I haven't had the shot myself, but my little sister, 20, is just coming off of it. She had a horrible experience with it. It caused fairly constant bleeding and spotting, nausea, weakness, fatigue, and a plethora of other fun symptoms for her. She said she was very sick when she first went on the shot, and she was even worse coming off of it. She's recently been so sick from it that I have had to come over to her house to take care of her.

With that said, for many women it is a safe and efficient birth control method. Also, the first six months on the shot are the worst. You will have irregular periods and it will put your body chemistry a bit out of whack. It is supposed to ease up after that period of time. Keep in mind, too, if you have an allergy to it, or if you just don't like the way you feel on the shot, it's still in your body for six months and there's nothing that can be done about it.

Personally, I would never have the shot. There are safer, more effective methods out there.

I would suggest the shot as long as you don't want to have kids for a few years. I took it and I loved it. I didn't have a period for two years and half a year after I stopped taking it. And when I got off of it I started my periods back normally. I did not gain any weight and my doctor told me it is the most effective form of birth control. I would not recommend the pill. I got pregnant while on it and know many other people who did as well. And also the shot didnt mess with anything. Just about a year after I stopped taking it I got pregnant and had a little boy.

i have been on the depo for 3 months i have done nothing but bleed. not spotting or minor stuff i had a full 3 month period. the depo makes you gain weight and tricks your body into thinking you are pregnant. therefore you have all the pregnancy symptoms. the depo can also cause you to have depression. i think the only best choice for a girl looking for birthcontrol is to really reasearch the good and bad of all of them. speak with your gyn/.doctor about what is best. it's more of a trial learning thing with what works and don't. i will tell you i have a pill, depo, pull out baby. so good luck with it all. abstience is the best birth control

NO!!!!!!
After my first child I was almost back to my original size...until I went on the depo. I gained 30 lbs in 3 months. I still have not been able to lose it and I have been off it for over 5 yrs!
You need to make sure that the hormone level they give is the right level for your body size. Everyone I know who has had the shot has gained weight, some not alot but most over 20 lbs.
Also once I went off it it took over a year and a half to get preg with my second child.
