NO NO NO NO
I had one shot once and that was enough. The upside: it is a shot once every 3 months and you don't get your period. Sounds great.
The downside: Depo is what they give sex offenders to reduce their sex drive. Also one of the side effects is hair loss and my hair came out in clumps when I was on it. When you stop taking it, you bleed for about 3 weeks. There is something unnatural about restricting your cycle like that.
Read these, then make your decision. Good luck

I'm 24 years old. I first got on the shot when I was 14 (just to be safe). I was on it until I was 21. I never had a problem. I had no weight gains, I had no hair loss, or loss of sexual desire. I stopped when I was 21 in order to have a baby with my husband. It only took 3 months to conceive. After the baby was born I went back on until we were ready again. I still had a period, although it was much shorter. 3 days vs. 5 days and it was very light. Really all you can do is read the pros and cons and see if its something you're willing to do. I am pregnant right now (by choice) and am considering a change after I have the baby. I was discussing the new IUC with my doctor. Its a much safer version of the IUD. It can be expensive and SOME insurance companies won't cover it, but you won't have to worry about any major changes or anything for 5 years. But my suggestion is to read all the pros and cons and discuss any questions with your doctor, that's what he's there for, he won't steer you in the wrong way. Good luck and I hope all goes well. I want to add that every birth control has different effects to everyone. As you see some people have had terrible effects as others have had none at all. Everyone's hormones are different, and cause different reactions for everyone. Anyone telling to just not do it... well don't listen to them, make your own decision based on the facts and a conversation with your physician.

i have been on the Depo shot for five years now and it has been very effective. The downfall to the shot is that it does create weight gain right after you get the shot but as long as you watch your diet you wont gain anything but it increases your appetite. Also it does not protect from STD's so really it is just a very effective birth control. You have to remember to get it every three months and get it on time or you will have to start the cycle all over. The real perk to it is that it will stop your period. I haven't had one in years. Its not 100% effective i have know someone to get pregnant while on the shot, so still wear protection but it is more effective than pills or the patch.

I hated being on Depo. I was 13 and was put on it for Endometriosis. Every shot I had horrible injection site pain, and my bones became brittle because of the high doses of hormones. You really need to talk to your doctor, and discuss the pro's and con's of any type of meds. Any of them can have side effects that you are not aware of and also may be uncomfortable.

Depo has been known to cause fertility problem later in life. I would look into these risks if there is a chance that some day you may want to get pregnant.
It has also been linked to bone loss after long term use.

I was on it for 9 months and had bleeding for 9 months. They kept giving me the shot early to try to stop it but it didn't. When I say bleeding I would get my period every month and then spot the rest of the time. I gained a lot of weight. It really sucked.

Yes, do check your family history. My sister was on it and had such bad mood swings she had to be put on Prozac.. I went on it after I had my first Child I went back to my prepregnancy weight got the shot and gained 40 lbs. Just be careful. God Bless. Although on it I didnt get prego. I have on Birth control though. Too low of a dose.

the shot you can get in the arm...it is very painful feels like a Tetnis shot and hurts for a few days...or you can get it in the top of your butt near your lower back or hip...that doesn't hurt nearly as bad!
i was on it for 3 yrs... i would have spotting on occasion with really bad cramps or i would spot daily for a month...no rhyme or reason...just had to deal with it..i was switching to pills..when i went off the shot i bled very badly...through a tampon and pad an hour...went to the ER twice and they just gave me fluids for dehydration...nothing else they could do about it...i had giant blood clots fall out of me when i stood up from the toilet...gross.. i bled that bad for 10 days and it stopped...I did go on it again after i had my children because i breastfed but didn't stay on it for more then a year...so i didn't have that bad of side effects
But if i was you i would research all your options and speak with your OB...it is a highly effective birth control and great for women that have trouble remembering to take pills...
Good Luck!

I have a couple friends who were getting the shot and they gained weight like crazy. Just make sure you research all the possible side effects.
