I think K's answer is great and I agree that OT can be a fun and rewarding career, but so can Physical Therapy.

Both careers are in high demand now and the salaries and signing on bonuses are both excellent. Physical therapists work with patients to regain function through improving muscle and joint efficiency and correcting and teaching proper body mechanics. We are able to directly treat a patient's diagnosis with modalities such as manual therapy, ultrasound, electric stimulation, traction, cold laser therapy, etc. So whereas we do not teach a patient how to get dressed, cook a meal, etc, we ensure that they will be able to do so more efficiently.

Both PTs and OTs are highly valuable in the rehabilitation world. Either choice would lead to a rewarding and exciting career. Good luck!

Just one more plug for Physical Therapy:
The American Physical Therapy Association is the professional organization for PTs. The website is: www.apta.org and you can find information on many aspects of PT on that website.

Occupational Therapy is so much better! I have spent a lot of time with both PT and OT, and I have come to enjoy OT so much more. From a patient's perspective, PT hurts more than OT (Sometimes, for fun, it is called Pain & Torture).

OT often looks like it is playing games, but it is all about meaningful activities and helping people to be independent after an illness or injury. OT's help people to learn or re-learn how to get dressed, use the bathroom, cook a meal, go shopping, etc. It is a profession that helps to give people dignity and independence with their daily activities. How could any career be more rewarding than that?

My son goes to PT every week and use to go to OT every week...he has much more fun with the PT~~Plus where he goes it would be great if there were more men PT's to work with the bigger children...all the PT's there are really tiny women...takes 2 to give him proper stretches. :)
