Sometimes people who leave an impression are easier to remember. I find myself saying the person's name a few times in my head as we're talking and it's easier to remember. Try this: next time you meet someone, try to think of a word that rhymes with their name. It might be easier to remember if, when you see Mike, you keep thinking about the word bike. Then it'll come to you. I use this method all the time and it really does work!

I agree with some of the answerers here that it's due to the other person not leaving an impression/ impact on you. They bear no significance whatsoever.
This happens to me as well. Mostly because the other person pronounces their name softly or they don't say it clearly is another factor.
Try remembering their name while repeating it mentally over your head several times/ jot it down on your palm/ paper, napkin, etc.

I have the same problem.
In addition, I don't remember their faces. Vey embarrassing.
When people make physical changes to their appearance -- such as getting new glasses, growing a beard, getting pregnant -- I don't notice.
I think this happens because people like us think about the person themselves -- not the name or face. I think about the person's role, job, function in the world and in my life, and THAT is what's important to me. My brain automatically filters out "irrelevant" stuff like the actual NAME of my kid's friend's mom. I just file her away in my brain as "kid's friend's mom".
Perhaps your problem is similar to mine.
In any event, you're not the only one who can't remember these things.

Some people have great short term memories. Some people don't. It's as simple as that. I can remember a face but the name eludes me.

I learned a trick. It sounds weird but it works. When someone is introducing themselves and they tell you their name, for instance, Hello my name is Mary", you says what was your name again (you say this to yourself not the person or they'll think your nuts) then you answer yourself back (in your head). Oh, her name is Mary. It works I first heard about it from a leading expert on memorization. Try it and good luck.

It happens. Try repeating their name. Like this:
Person (to you): Hi. I'm Bob.
You: Hi Bob. Nice to meet you. I'm
Bob: Nice to meet you.
You: So, Bob, what do you do? (How do you know the host? How 'bout those Mets? Whatever you want to ask. The point is to repeat Bob's name as often as you can in the conversation.)

ur brain is not bothered to process the names.
it's just like how we'll forget telephone numbers after we've dialled it. We only remember it at the moment.
