I am looking for a house and finally found one that i like a put an offer in that was accepted. The only thing i do not like about the house is that it does not have a privacy fence. I ould like to built one as soon as i get the keys. I am a first time home buyer and do know that there is a permit involve in this, but are there any restrictions and what are they? Or just tell me where i can get information.
I should mention that the house is located in Massachusses, in the North Shore.

Thank you

There is one other possible consideration in addition to the permit. IF this house is in a development and the development has a homeowners association, you will have to also have their permission to build the fence and it will have to match their idea of cohesiveness.

When we moved here, we bought a house in a development, and we had to submit the plans for our inground pool and fence to the association. We also had to have a legal form signed by the neighbors on each side stating that they had no objections to us putting in a pool.

No. A permist isn't enough. You must first obtain documentated permission from the city planners office to build a fence. This is known as a Permit.

I don't know what a permist will get you.

Instead of a fence consider Leyland cypress trees - this was the best thing we ever did. we can't even see the house next door. They gorw quickly. No upkeep and grass does not grow under them.

You should be able to get all that info at the local permitting office.
