Depending on the part of the brain the cells were in, information is lost. You could lose the power of speech. You could be paralyzed. You could simply lose information you used to have: I knew a gentleman in college who had suffered brain damage while he was ill, and he was no longer quite able to interact on the same age level as the other students.

you become brain dead, this can be figurative or very real. For example, people who do too many drugs may lose their short term memory, their cognitive function may be significantly decreased, their overall ability to function may be impaired. People who lose oxygen to their brain for extended periods of time (stroke, heart attack, aneurysm, near drownings) can live in vegetative states...in other words their organs function, but they are unresponsive to the outside world.
