I have always thought that the best place is with big brothers/big sisters. to me, giving of time, effort and love is more than anyone can ask for. Even a couple of hours to take a child to a game or the zoo. You're an influence to them in a world where their influences can be pretty grim.
I used to volunteer at a children's hospital and it was unreal the way the kids would light up JUST from my sister and I playing with them once a week. they just couldn't get over someone paying attention to them other than the nurses. It was 20 years ago and I think about it daily, it was so emotional and moving.

I worked with Habitat for Humanity last Summer and it was great. We built a house, working only on Saturdays from 7am - 1pm. Maybe they have projects in your area that your schedule would allow you time to participate in.
