To add to longhunter: The squadron was equipped with specially adapted Lancaster heavy bombers, which dropped a unique cylindrical "bouncing" bomb. The idea, which worked beautifully, was to release them over the reservoir created by the dam, where they would skip along the surface, hit the dam, sink to the bottom, and explode. By destroying the dam, it wiped out a lot of infrastructure, roads, bridges, plus, it deprived the Germans of hydroelectric power and water resources.
