It isn't just the western country economies dependent on it. One of the reason for gas price spikes have been a large increase in dependency from the biggest population countries, China and India. The problem is the entire world is dependent on a very limited supply of product.
The Western countries will never be come independent on their own supplies because they don't have enough supply to meet the demand. The only way that will change is if a new fuel supply comes along that is much cheaper and equal to or more efficient than fossil fuels, and it still requires us getting rid of the nearly 1 billion cars in the US currently.

Actually the US has plenty of oil. The general thought over the last 20 years has been to use foreign oil for as long as we can. Once the supply runs out, then the US will be in a very good economic position to the point where we will be the largest global creditor. We are only dependant on foreign oil because we refuse to use our own.

I use to listen to Rock. ( I moved on. ) I do remember Frank Zappa. One of his lyrics was that the companies are going to sell you something and they've been planning it for years.

By now, all of us know there are alternate sources. The general consensus is to continue using this junk. Too, the internal combustion engine, like the rocket, has well had it's day. At root?

It is going to take a long time but it will happen. We just need to get these big business oil lobbyists out of office, and the ball will start rolling.

I think if our "free economy" let gas prices rise unchecked (like they should) we would have viable alternative fuel sources in 9 months.

I'm talking $500 conversion kits you can get installed in you current car.
