Most couples register at several places to let you know what kinds of gifts they would like. You can ask the bride where she is registered and check out the Bridal registry or a gift card is always appropriate. That way the bride and groom can pick out what they need the most. Be sure and let the cashier know your gift is a bridal gift off of a bridal registry. That way it can get checked off the list and they don't end up with 10 toasters!

For the bridal shower you can buy gifts for the bride to use on the wedding night, you can give her something blue, old, etc.
You can also check where they are registered and get your gift from there.
I tend to buy the bride a personal gift, because it is her party. You can buy a wedding gift for the couple.
