Sir, Jimi Hendrix is popular even today. I would assume he was popular in the 70's also.
He's timeless.

Jimi Hendrix died in September 1970, so the only popularity he has is oldies, and I can't see that fading away. He had some very good songs, so yes to your question was he still popular in the 70's.

Jimi Hendrix made his name as a Guitar player in England in the late 60's after being discharged from the U.S. 82nd Airborne Div after ruining his knees in a parachute jump. He was invited to Woodstock in 1969 and played the freakishly original version of the "Star Spangled Banner". After his first group, The Jimi Hendrix Experience broke up, he was also in a group called "Band of Gypsys" with Buddy Miles. He was very popular in the 70's and remains so today as an influence to guitarists experimenting with electronic feedback musicianship

He became very popular in the late 60's, which is when he produced the most music. This carried into the early '70's, but he overdosed and died in Sept 1970. So he didn't really have much of a chance to make an impact in that particular decade.
His only notable recordings toward the end of his career were his remake of "All Along the Watchtower" by Bob Dylan, and his performance at Woodstock.
He is still popular to this day for his innovation, and is still regarded as one of the best guitarists of the Rock era. You either loved his music or hated it, but no one was like him. He is in a class by himself.

Hugely popular. Hell, the guy played at Woodstock! I have his Greatest Hit's CD, plus 2 other Hendrix CD's. Whenever I'm in the mood to "blow my mind" like I did in the 70's, out comes those CD's.

I'm sure he was, but dying helped so much just like it does with many less talented musicians. Like Kurt Cobain or Stevie Ray Vaughn just to name a few. When they were alive they were OK at best. But with a little but bad/good luck your plane crashes, you eat the shotgun, you overdose, and BAM! you were a god. When in reailty if the were still alive today they would most likely be home less or trying to get a gig at the Holiday Inn..

Of course! His musical legacy started in the later 1960's and continues today. His music can heard not only on classic rock radio stations, but also in movies and TV commercials. Being considered one of (if not the one) rock and roll's true innovators has insured his influence has lasted for 40 years - and will probably continue for the next 40.

He died in 1970, but his popularity remained for some time after his death. Several earlier recorded tracks were released under his name in the 1970s.
