PHONOLOGY

The study of all sounds that are possible in human speech is Phonetics. The study of the sounds that are used in a particular language is Phonology.

note1: phonics is a method for teaching spelling
note2: many languages can be traced back to an Indo-European group including most european and middle-eastern languages, but not all languages from around the world, although there are similar 'parent' languages on other continents, and several isolated languages that don't seem to be related to any others

I'm learning stuff just by looking at your answers to the two twin questions, answerers. Thanks. I always hear that all the earth's languages can be traced back to a common Indo-European ancestral tongue, with the exception of the Basque language. Any other languages that don't trace back, like how about Navajo?
Anyway, I love etymology, the study of word origins.
