I'm looking purchase a Porsche 911 when I leave Uni as I have £20k saved for the purpose.

I'd like it to be the late 80s/ early 90s shape, in black, targa top. Tea-tray spoiler and a turbo engine.

Was this car ever made?

Thanks!

A specific model name would be ideal!

OK enough of the silly answers about insurance, I was asking a genuine question- I'm a 28yr old mature student with 10 years no claims at the moment, so I'll be 30 by the time I get one

Yes, there was a 911 turbo (which had a whale tail at the time) with a targa top. And, at least in the States, it's in your price range. The last year was 1989, and kbb suggested retail price, with average miles, is $25K, which is less than 20K pounds.

You might want to start searching now, though - I'm sure finding one won't be terribly easy.

Yes it exists it was called the 911 targa and to be honest was a bag of ****. they had not sorted out the handling then and they are VERY tail happy especially in damp conditions. The trouble stems from the engine COV being behind the rear axle. this makes the rear of the car behave like a pendulum. Ive had 2 911s, an 80s turbo targa in guards red and a very nice custom yellow 911 carerra 1990. the 1990 car was lots better but to be honest they are a pain in the **** to drive quickly, they have great brakes but the rest needs to go in the bin, a hugely overrated car. If you want a usable Porsche then look at a 928 V8 or a 944 turbo. The 911 series for the money you have isn't worth it. Actually you can pick up a Ferrari 328 gts or gto for about £20000 far more sexy and quite reliable. I have a 1987 GTSi at the moment and it is more fun than the Porsche's ever were, turns more heads too. Also consider a Lamborghini jalpa or urraco, V8 power and quite reliable. But if you have your heart set on a 911 then prepare to be disappointed.

I think you are lloking for a 930, but in the 80s that was NOT available with the targa roof. I am 85% sure there was not a factory turbo targa, but you may find an aftermarket one. The issue is that anything that fits your wants is likely out of your price range. The money you mentioned may be able to secure a flat six targa from the late 80s, but you will need ot be ready for repair costs which can be high on those models. To summarize:

930: turbo, no targa, twitchy to drive, and somewhat higher in cost due to collector value.

911 Targa or Targa SC: not a turbo, but air cooled six and may be in your price range.

Funny how all the people who are bagging on Porsches are NEVER gonna have the funds to own one...never mind actually DRIVE one.

I have a 1983 SC Targa, and it has gone up in value by $4000 since I bought it, and is nothing short of phenomenal. I've raced Z06's across Texas with it, and the vette quit after lunched his tranny at 140MPH.

And Ferrari(FIAT)...what a pile. They didn't get there act together until a few years ago, so anything prior to 1998 is garbage.

Try to find a 1-owner, low miles 1987-1989 Carrera, and you'll have it for life. Rock-on!

Dude for 20k you could put down money on a house, f**k the porsche, chances are you'll crash it cos of its s**t handaling. Don't believe me? Consider this- Porsches' answer to their weight distribution problem got so bad they resorted to puttin lead into the front bumper to try and even out the distribution in that era.
