The one constant through all the years has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.

Baseball is considered a national past time in the US because it is the oldest professional sport in the US. Major league baseball was established in 1869. Professional football started in the early 1920s I believe, and professional basketball started in the 1940s. I'm not sure about hockey but that's a Canadian sport anyway.

It was probably considered the national past time in the US in the 40's, 50's and 60's. Not anymore though.

because unlike any other sport it is played everywhere professionally somewhere within range of everyone in America. I live in a major market and can actually see 5 pro teams with in 2 hrs 5 minor league teams in 2 hrs, unknown college teams, and legion teams, let alone little league.
