It's inexpensive and the basic rules are simple. If you can get your hands on a ball and have enough space with two marked spots for goals, anyone can play a pick-up game. Therefore, anyone can play it, even if you're rather poor.

No equipment + easy rules = a good game for the impoverished to play. Since most of the world is rather poor, it's a universal game.

That's why I think we Americans should appreciate soccer/football more; it's a chance, on a competitive level, to be more in tune with how the less fortunate live and play.

because all you need to play is something that resembles a ball, couple of jumpers for goal posts and a street or bit of ground to play on. in other words it is a game which can be played by anyone, it is a game which does not know class boundaries, which is why Ronaldinio is one of the finest players in the world along with Wayne Rooney, and lets not forget George Best!! all from very poor backgrounds and started playing on the streets!

its an international sport. its a sport that can be played and appreciated by all backgrounds, hockey, basketball, baseball has its skill and is world wide to a certain degree.

soccer dates back hundred's of years, the skill and training involved is in a class of its own. For some countries football is a way of life, like Brazil. Its a way to escape the downfalls in life.

so why is it so popular, because it just is. you either love it or hate it.

Like any other sport, people had an urge to put their brain in neutral. Naturally, without tv or radio or movies, this is what came out. Still works, too. Unbelieveably.

Lots of gay men like to watch other gay men playing with balls. While wearing shorts and hugging and kissing each other everytime they score. Which is when they actually score.
