You know, the whole Daja/Rizu thing, and the entire new world of gay fantasy characters? I thought it was brilliant, but a friend of mine, who's a Tamora Pierce addict, thought it was highly uncharacteristic (forgive the pun) of Pierce and just found it jilting and confusing.

Any Tamora fans out there who can give me a clue?

I am a big fan of Tamora Pierce and I like the Daja books. Yes, I think the new world of gay fantasy characters is a step away from what she's written before, but how can you say it's uncharacteristic of Pierce? It is Pierce. Also, the world itself is becoming more accepting of homosexuality, so why should we be surprised when we find literature evolving in the same manner? I think it's interesting to see this new facet of Tamora's writing.

I've read some of Pierce's books but I didn't like her magic steps series, or the circle opens. I just didn't like the characters and the story was very boring in the beginning.

It was perfect. It added a twist and we found out more about Daja.
