The lug nut was stripped, and after peeling open the top and sides with with a drill motor and cold chisel I think the best thing is to drill into the stud and use an Easy Out to remove the stud and the remnant lug nut together. (Yes, I learned about the "lug nut removal tool" after I had reached this point.)

Is an Easy Out, say a" No. 5, drill 17/64" a good idea, or does the stud press in-or even have a left hand thread inside the rotor?

It is pressed in. You can remove it with a punch and hammer. Replacing it is another thing.

if this is a rotor/hub assem you need to take the rotor of the spindle, them knock the stud out the back of the rotor, to replace do in reverse. if the rotor is separate from the hub take rotor of of hub and knock stud out the back of the hub assem. to reinstall take a wheel nut and put in on the stud backwards as not to damage the nut seating area and thighten the stud until it is seated on the back side of the hub. if the stud has a shoulder use washers that are larger than the shoulder but the nut will have enough to contact

After you knock the stud out , slip in the new one from behind. If the head of the stud won't clear the hub in back of the rotor , grind a notch on the replacement studs head. Just enough to to clear the obstruction

this is what you do, knock it back with a hammer, place the new one in from behind and put the new nut on it and tighten it w/o the wheel on that will repress it the hub. then take the nut off,put your wheel back on then tighten good and youre done. check it every day for a week.
