My friends and I went to this good Italian restaurant..And we had good dinner and also caught up with some soccer (yes it is 10.30 pm here)bill was paid by one of my friend...on our way back he told us that the bill was actually a smaller amount. We concluded that we were erroneously billed...I suggested that we go back and pay the actual due….my friend gave me a ridiculous look and just didn't seem to bother..My conscience pricks me as if I just swindled some one!

Your conscience seems to be very strong. Good, keep it up.

In the situation you have mentioned, the financial interaction is between the restaurant and your friend. It is not connected to you all together. You were just the guest and in my opinion, you have got nothing to do with it. If you were the host, you would have been obliged to go back and pay the rest.

From the business prospect, restaurants that do wrong calculations and charge their customers less will do so at their own irresponsibility. Why pay them for their mistakes from your pocket? If your friend had cheated, as part of his group, it would have been your responsibility to fight it and perhaps pay... You guys just payed them what they asked.

I am not telling you to act against your conscience. Just suggesting not to over react. You cannot fill all gaps in the world. You are the third person in the scene. Work wise! No need to lose sleep over this.

However, do retain your morals and in YOUR interactions, make sure such misunderstandings don't occur.

If youre still at the place its appropiate to fix the bill and pay the higher amount but if you realized it later then no harm no foul.Ive gotten too much change back and noticed and told the cashier about it, but if im already home and realize it then its not my fault and i can sleep well at night.Once a guy gave me back 5.00 too much and the next time i went in he asked for it back and i said sure and gave it back.If it seriously bothers you to the point you cant sleep go back and give the manager the difference cuz theres no money thats worth losing a good nights sleep over.Dont forget the "come around".If you cheated someone then the cances are youll get cheated back thats just how it works.Good luck

I'm not sure I understand. Did your friend under pay the restaurant? If you think that's what happened then you should check with the restaurant because typically, the restaurant will make the waiter/waitress make up the difference. If it's something else than I'm not clear on what.

If it bothers you that much, perhaps you should write an anonymous letter to the manager of the establishment, explain what happened, and include the amount still owed. Otherwise, you're no different than your friend who knowingly cheated the restaurant.
