think of yourself in western europe where the term originated. You got the far, middle and near east's. Far is the asian pacific (china mostly), middle east is persia and arabia and n. africa, near is eastern europe(ottoman empire). North and south america not involved yet.

Think of Europe as "here". China, Japan, India ext. Are to your east. And far away. The middle east is in the middle.

It is because of historical reasons. I mean before they discovered the two Americas the "middle east" region was in the middle of Asia, Africa and Europe.

In terms of longitude, it is in the middle of the Eastern Hemisphere. Same sort of reason as to why the China, Korea, and Japan region is referred to as the far east.

It's just an overused Eurocentric term.

Its actually Southwestern Asia and Northeast Africa.
