Think of your brain as another muscle, if you overexercise a muscle you can land yourself a hernia or worse, distrophy. Same in the brain, you need to rest it as well, otherwise you're just asking for a stroke or something.

Everyone needs sleep. Without sleep, people are less efficient and more irritable. All adults require from seven to nine hours of sleep to function at optimum level. Sleep gives your body a chance to rest and make any necessary repairs, not just from illness and injury, but from the stress and strain of everyday life.

But sometimes sleep is dangerous if you over sleep. For example,if there is fire or tsunami or whatsoever, you never relised because you just sleep peacefully. Not only that,if you over sleep, you'll be late to work and who knows you get fired!Be carefull when you sleep too.

But yes, sleep is important for all living things

Not all living things need sleep, but many higher animals do. The body needs this time to replenish and store neurotransmitters -- much like the grocery store needs to restock food items after a busy day of selling. In addition, time is required to "restock" hormones, enzymes and worn-out blood cells. Membranes (such as in muscle cells) need time to redirect sodium and potassium ions in preparation for action potentials (movements) for the next day.

It helps the body rejuvenate and replenish the worn out parts of the body.

The real nature and purpose of sleep has long puzzled scientists. Ancient humans believed that the soul left the body during sleep, and the well-known prayer that includes the words, "if I should die before I wake," tells us something about the fear we may experience when we surrender to unconsciousness every night.

Resttoration of cells, simply put. The body stores more Oxygen in sleep than in waking moments. That's why you get a headache if you sleep too much, and you fall asleep on the road when you don't get enough sleep. IN MY PERSONNAL OPINION.

The answer is the opposite of "Why is being awake important for all living things?".

Lets the body rest due to relative inactivity, and lets the mind rest through temporary inattention to external sensory stimuli (the process of which, uninterrupted, might drive us nuts!)

Because if your body engine burns constantly, it will finally blow up. Sleep rejuvenates your body so you can get through the next day.

believe it or not, your body is most active when you're sleeping. Do you dream during the daytime? Actually yes, for some people, it is called daydreaming.
