Yes there is. There are still plenty of places where workers are being treated "unfairly". In other words, there are still conditions in the work place that gave rise to unions in the first place.
Union membership (and to some extent relevance) had been declining for some years.
I heard this morning (on radio) that union membership is gaining in the south where it had traidtionally been anti-union or low union participation. Complaints cited included things like wages, health care and working conditions.
All that said- I've never been a huge fan of unions because of some tactics they have used in the past and that some have become bloated. Some (e.g. UAW) have also created conditions (along with the US auto makers) that have put our industry in a position where it is VERY difficult to compete (due to huge retirement, health and wage liablilities).

exertions unions were initially created to guard workers' rights - an fairly noble reason. even if, they could also cripple many organizations and platforms at the same time as abused. average, I disapprove of exertions unions for 2 commonplace causes: a million) they can bypass "too far" and would cripple organizations through pushing too far, coming for the time of opposed as a substitute of partnering with top administration to paintings in route of a at the same time useful determination, and draining economic components of suffering organizations through stressful will advance and larger advantages throughout the time of tight cases (imagine airways, enormous apple MTA, etc.) 2) The can unwittingly promote and "shelter" lazy, less than-effective, and unmotivated those who're tenured (imagine instructors in public college platforms who're ineffective and, at cases, will be despised through the little ones and households they're envisioned to serve, while more recent, fairly enticing and commonplace workers, or thus, instructors, do no longer attain any rewards until eventually later in existence if in any respect. once back, this does no longer propose that each and each one unions are undesirable or poorly run, for instance, Southwest airways has a ultimate, invested unionized paintings force and should be an celebration to all, yet too many are not any further as a lot as par and critically make a contribution to adverse shopper provider and afflicted funds.

There's always a potential need, but I would agree that the need today, in the U.S. at least, is a lot less than in the past.
