Yes there could be a hardware conflict. Try the mouse manufacturers website for the latest software and drivers. I might also make mention that if you are using a wireless mouse you might be experiencing radio interference. Try moving your mouse dongle closer to your mouse when this occurs. I had this problem one time and after much anguish I found it was only happening when the neighborhood Ham radio operator was on his radio flappin his jaws. Moving my wireless mouse dongle cured the problem. By the way, I COMMEND you for the details! Most people ask questions and wont give details of their system!

About good 70 percent of all computer freezes occurs when there is a signal sent from the processor to the video card. Basically any picture event is that kind of signal the processor in turn is waiting for an acknowledgment from the video card that it received the signal and processed it successfully. the process is then getting hung on waiting for the return signal from the video card where sometimes the video card gets stuck with returning the signal. My advice, try another cheap video card and see if this is really the problem.

It may be a driver problem. Make sure that you have the latest version of the mouse driver installed.

It is either CPU, or motherboard problem.
Check your CPU FAN, Chassis FAN and SVGA FAN.
