It's the 'bleach' used in processing to make all sanitary products 'pure as the driven snow'. If you find them irritating try the health food or 'wholesome market' for unbleached alternatives. Failing that there is the diva cup (which I hear works great) or fema cup....the less processed the product, the better off you'll be.

Good Luck

Look for pads made of 100% cotton (some natural stores carry them). They should be unbleached, untreated cotton so there's very little for you to react to.

Be sure you're changing the pad often enough. Don't let it hang around for more than a few hours even if it looks almost clean. Germs build up & irritate the skin.

Some sanitary pads have a light scent to them, or are deodorized. Some women may be allergic to these. Tampons? No thanks.. Try the 100% percent cotton pads, or look for unscented, undeodorized pads.

there are some pads with a smooth, fabric-like cover,, and others with something like a plastic cover. Try to use the ones with the fabric like cover, the plastic ones are the most irritating ones...and change your pad frequentlly.
