Soccer is known as football or futbol in other parts of the world. Pele does not play for the USA.

the fifth ranking is based on fifa system for ranking, that is their performance in past world cups and their record in other competitions.
they had a brilliant world cup 4 years ago. that helped with their 5th ranking. but what hurts the european teams in the rankings is that they play strong opponents (european cup has spain, england, italy, sweden, france, etc.) whereas US plays Mexico and thats about it.
their rankings are over inflated and don't project realistically on the true rank of different teams.

No because they didn't do anything really. Green handed them a goal to tie England, they had to come back from a 2-0 deficit against Slovenia and wow..... a stoppage time goal against Algeria?? Wasn't this supposed to be the easiest group for the US ever? If they struggled to get out then they didn't deserve to beat a good Ghana team that was playing without Michael Essien. What's gonna happen when the US lands in a group of death in the future?

Somebody said the FIFa Ranking's are based on who you play. Noooooooooooooo. FIFa give the same points for beating Togo that they give for Beating a Quality team like Argentina or Brazil. That's why the USA are ranked so high. Try playing Germany, Italy, Spain, France, Portugal and Holland every year and see how high the USA get. Couldn't even beat an Overrated Ghana team, in-fact Ghana looked like the 5th best team, thats how bad the US were.

poor coaching, bad refs but most of all a bad start. Bruce Arena did horible and did not make the right decesions at the right times. The refs jipped us out of many games (2 dumb red cards and the PK in the Ghana game) and plus we had a dismall first game. I also think from the start we didnt deserve that world rank of 5th and now thats been proven. I also beleive fan and analyists expectations were to high saying this could be the year and this was USA's best team ever. Those comments and hopes put an amazing amount of preasure on the Americans and we still cant live up to it. Bad coach, Bad refs, Bad start and too high excpectations messed up USA's run this year.

When it comes to the World Cup you can throw the rankings out the window, anyone can beat anyone on a given day. The US has never won on European soil... EVER. This should give you a clue as to how tough competition is throughout the world.
I'm as disappointed as anyone that they didn't advance or even geta win. I thought this would be the year that they'd break through and get a 'W' in Europe, but the realist in me is not surprised.
This was humbling for the US team no doubt, but hopefully they will learn from the experience and hope for better luck next time.

Hey, being ranked 5th in the world means nothing. Besides I think that the FIFA ranking are quite ridiculous. Team USA are just overrated.

they failed to advance cause they lost...simple as that they were outplayed and out run by a faster younger Ghana team. You can complain about refs all you want the fact still remains that the US only had one shot on goal in 2 matches before today. They did not play well.

Somehow, and no one has any clue how, the U.S. was ranked #5. What the hell? I mean they lost to a team ranked in like the 90's a while ago!!!! It was a mistake. Watch the WC and you'll see why the U.S. lost to Ghana.

There's no way in hell U.S.A could be 5th in the world soccer. Basketball? yeah. Baseball? yeah. That's impossible my friend. They lost because and fail to advance in the world cup, because most players have some stupid games like baseball, hockey to play back home.

the rating system need a little work, but c'mon, ghana is a better team, and did you see Reina's wussy attitude that cost the game? why is it every time a footballer gets touched anywhere they fall down and cry like they just got shot in the knee? then they get up like nothing ever hapened. Sweden's gonna win anyway! HEJA SVERIGE!!!
