What ever you say just keep in mind, he knows why the manager sent you out.

So, just let him know why you were happy to come out.

Tell him the umpire keeps grabbing your *** when your in the crouch position so you are heppy get a break from the action behind the plate.

In other words, just loosen him up with small talk, even silly.

I would like to preface my answer with a statement of my expertize in baseball. I have been playing baseball for over 25 years. Now I also coach as well as play the game so the answer is simple. You can talk to him about anything. Ask him if hes having a fun time? Is he arguing with his parents/girlfriend or something that might effect his concentration. Basically get his mind off that bad pitch/at bat/hit or whatever he just did. Once you get him to shift gears in his mind pitching is easier. It is the opposite when a pitcher tries real hard to throw strikes, he will have harder time hitting the strike zone. The next step is you have to remind him that he has done this a million time before and this not any different. Finally challenge him. "can you get this out ?" any pitcher that answers no to this you get the coach and get a new pitcher. Then never let that pitcher pitch again. Just remember catch this is just a game. It was made in a simpler times and sometimes people want to complicate things but this is a part of the game that is simple. Pefect, I am a pitching coach for a high school team. A lot of the time when a coach wants his catcher to talk to the pitcher it is to buy time to get someone ready in the bullpen, with the coach not wanting to waiste a trip to the mound. The best thing to do is to go out there and clam him down, especially if he is wild and walking guys. Talk about something other than the game. When pitchers loose their command they start to think about it more than anything and the best way to get them out of it is to change their train of thought. Talk about girls, video games, music something to take his mind off of the fact that he is throwing bad. Then try to refocus him by saying something a long the line of, just play catch with me!

Your job as a catcher is to know your pitchers, some guys are different than others. Some guys you can change their thoguhts and others you just have to go out there and put a fire under their backside. I have my pitchers and catchers try and do as much together as possible and I tell my pitchers to have respect and to be thankful for the job that their catcher is doing for them. Nothing is worse than a catcher and a pitcher who do not like eachother.

Try to calm him down. Usually a mound visit by a catcher has to do with the pitcher being nervous or not having his best stuff. The catcher tries to reassure him and/or strategize what pitches to throw in the future.

Tell him to relax. Tell him to just throw and not worry about the ppl on base if he his struggling finding the zone. Trust your pitcher. Study the batters, know their weaknesses and what pitches they have trouble hitting. Just try to calm him down. Tell him the defense will make plays for him.

you should tell him to relax, take a breath and just play catch. Remind them that the whole team is there to back him up, so just throw it in and let the team do the rest.

Most times its just to help him/her refocus and calm - let him/her know you have confidence in them and that they have the skill to do the job - basically a bit of a pep talk.
