If you are looking for something not so fancy that works every time, go with AXE. Its more of a "body spray" but it works wonders and several of them smell really nice.

If you are looking for actual colonges, Giorgio Armani makes a couple that have a nice fragrance to them. 'Acqua de gio' and 'Black code' are good and neither of them have any hint of a fruity scent. Those are more everyday wear colognes.

The ones that I find the best smelling...and that I personally have always liked is the self titled cologne of Givenchy and Givenchy Blue Label. The first is more for a night out, and Blue Label is more of a day wear but both of them have a really pleasing smell.

In the end its up to you, but those are my suggestions.

I noticed that nobody suggested that you take your husband along. It would be a shame to spend money on something that he would only wear because you think it smells nice. Different scents smell different on different people. The "top note" of a fragrance is going to be different from the "middle note' or "bottom note", the terms for what a scent smells like after the alcohol has evaporated and the body's own scents blend with the chosen fragrance. Go to different places and ask for samples, the reputable places usually have small vials of fragrance to give out. Take them home, test them out, over time, then choose the one that you both like after having him wear it for an hour. Then go buy him a bottle of what you have both decided on. Buying flowers ought to be a surprise but buying something as intimate as a new fragrance should not be a solo activity. It's a lonely person who buys their own perfume/cologne.
