I want to try to understand how my mother and sister think, so I can better meet their needs as a son and a brother, but I need a little help understanding why you would yell or cry or hug. I am a guy with a need for wisdom. Any help would be hot?

Mathematicians talk of all these really hard unsolved problems like the Riemann hypothesis or whether NP=P, but by far the hardest one is understanding women :)
Just kidding. You have to be sensitive and put yourself in their place, and if you're close enough and know enough about their life history, you can start to have an idea of how they think, although this understanding is usually imperfect. But just by being interested in understanding them, you have taken the first step.
