Well, once upon a time, there was no such thing as fashion. One day, I think, the King of England or of some other European country, decided that each season there would be a book explaining what everyone should be wearing. I'm not kidding-- I heard this on NPR. Before these books, if you went to a tailor and asked for a pair of shoes, the tailor would just bring you out a pair, no matter what they looked like. As for the purses, I'm sure somewhere along the line they came to be considered feminine. I'm also sure that once women were able to have more control over a family's wealth, they decided to carry purses.

i don't know but i am so glad they stopped. although i was playing tennis one day and saw this guy come up to the courts and he was carrying a purse. i had to stop playing because i was laughing so hard.
