The publishing business is one cut-throat industry, with a lot of heavy hitters and big businesses. One thing you have to consider is what will your publishing house have that can compete with the big boys. You must know the ins and outs of marketing books, and should have thorough knowledge of the process of publishing a book.

The first step is to prepare a business plan, keeping in mind the competitors you will face in this business. Barnes and Noble alone publishes 10,000 or more books for their own stores.

The following industry groups and associations can help you learn more about the business:

American Booksellers Association http://www.bookweb.com
Book Industry Study Group http://www.bisg.org
American Business Media (ABM): http://www.americanbusinessmedia.com/
National Association of Publishers Representatives: http://www.naprassoc.com/

This page has a great set of links for publishers http://www.publishingbiz.com/html/links.html

I recommend reading the following books:

Make Money Self-Publishing: Learn How From Fourteen Successful Small Publishers by Suzanne P. Thomas http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0966469127/ref=nosim/powerhomebizguid

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Start Your Own Self-Publishing Business (Entrepreneur Magazine's Start Up) by Entrepreneur Press
* How To Start And Run A Small Book Publishing Company: A Small Business Guide To Self-Publishing And Independent Publishing by Peter I. Hupalo
* Art & Science Of Book Publishing by Herbert S., Jr. Bailey
* This Business of Books: A Complete Overview of the Industry from Concept Through Sales by Claudia Suzanne

I also posted links to some free articles in the source box.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!
