I was talking to a friend of mine and she told me that there are things like people having intercourse with animals and young girls being raped. I know things like that are edited out in America, but if anyone has seen these in Japanese versions, can you tell me if it's actually true?

Than depends which manga, your friend is probably thinking of more 'adult' manga with more graphic and sensitive material edited out. Most manga sold in bookstores (Dragon Ball Z, Inuyasha, Fruits Basket) is translated as is.

I beleive it's true. There is a kind of anime and manga called Hentai with strong sexual material. I have never seen that actually, but I beleive it's possible.
