Because when they were designing typewriters (way back when), they keys would get stuck if you pushed the letters too quickly. So, they designed the QWERTY system to slow typists down & prevent the "keys clogging." Later, when technology improved, a new system called Dvorak was put together to increase the speed. However, so many people & systems were wedded to the old system that it never caught on.

There is an interesting story abt this in a book called "Diffusion of Innovations." I think it's by Rogers or Everett or Everett Rogers, or something like that.

I used to wonder the same thing.

Back when typewriters were first invented, the inventor needed a gimmick to help sell them. So he decided to put the letters in the word 'typewriter' in the top letter row, along with a few other keys to help fill it out. The leftover letters and characters were arranged a bit more sensibly.

The QWERTY keyboard has been with us ever since, though now another keyboard is gaining advocates.

The keyboard was originally designed so that the most commonly used letters were spaced out so they wouldn't stick when you were typing - remember the old hammer typewriters with the actual keys and ribbon? Well if you typed to fast with letters that were next to each other then they would stick. Especially with letters RST for example

When the typewritter was invented it first was in alphabetical order, however, the keys had a tendency to "stick" greatly and, therefore, in order for the keys not to "stick" (and be unuseable) it was determined that the letters (keys) should be "rearranged".
